Real Life Stories From Au Pairs

Real life au pair stories

Being an au pair has been one of the best things I have done with my life so far. When I first came to England I was quite homesick but after 5 weeks I felt much better as I had made friends with other au pairs. I came with an agency and they found me a nice family. I had a fantastic year and went travelling around the UK too which was the best. At the end of the year I was very sad when I had to go home. I will miss my family but I hope I will come back and visit them. (Maria, Sweden)

I learnt so much from coming to England as an au pair. It was the first time I had spent a long time away from my family. I learnt a lot about children and a lot about myself. It has been very good for my English and I feel could travel anywhere in the world now. I learnt to cook many English meals which I will never forget. I have made many good friends from all over the world and I learnt what it is really like to look after 4 children. I became very close to my family and we will be friends forever. There are some hard moments in the year but I learnt from these too. I think being an au pair is a great experience and I would recommend it to everyone. (Halla, Iceland)

You have to be sure you want to be an au pair and talk with others about what it is like first. I found a family through an agency and I found it was better than my friends who found host families themselves. I learnt so many things from my au pair year including things about myself and how I work. It is a good experience to live with another family and see how they work. You learn to be more independent and sort things out for yourself. You appreciate the good things about your own home more. Even if you have babysat children before it is not the same as living with them. You learn how to really look after them and to understand them and have fun with them. It is interesting to see a new culture and take home some good bits of it. You have time at weekends to discover England and I went to Paris and Scotland too. And my English has improved too.
